The four allegedly stole S$120,000 worth of foreign currencies from Mustafa Foreign Exchange along Syed Alwi Road on Aug 12. They were subsequently arrested in Malaysia on Aug 21 and extradited to Singapore the next day, after a warrant for their arrests was issued by the State Courts.
Three suspects, Chavez Gomez Joel, 35, Salgado Sida Jesus Alfonso, 59, and Olvera Ochoa Laura Daniela, 30, are Mexican. The fourth suspect, 47-year-old Petrovich Yobano, is Chilean.
The suspects were brought in four police vehicles to Mustafa Centre shortly after 10am on Tuesday morning. Accompanied by a Spanish interpreter, the four were taken into the shopping centre one at a time to re-enact their movements leading up to the theft.
A large crowd of at least 100 bystanders lined the street outside of the shopping centre to catch a glimpse of the four accused, while at least 70 others had gathered inside the mall.
When they were arrested, cash amounting to more than S$15,000 in different currencies was recovered. If convicted, the suspects will each face a jail term of up to 7 years and be liable to a fine.
